Buy Local. Eat Local. Be Local.

Home Grown is a non-profit organization that encourages the community of Lexington to buy locally, use gardens, and eat organically. Our Group is trying to encourage communities to maybe buy local foods from your city's farmers market or even start a garden at your own home hence "home grown"!

There are so many things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. Buying locally from a farmer's market is a great way to do this. Just think of all the miles most of your food has to travel to get to your plate. For example, the world's top banana producer is India. To get to America it has to travel about 7500 miles. That is long trip for one banana and also a bad trip for the environment. This trip to get bananas to America from India releases 43.65 tons of CO2 annually. On the other hand, buying in season and locally grown foods doesn't use up all that much CO2. Sure, you may want to buy non-locally grown foods, but you can reduce that amount which will help out the environment a lot. Saving a 7500 mile trip is a good thing for everyone.
The Lexington Farmer's Market is open until November 28th at Cheepside Park on Saturdays, and on South Broadway and Maxwell Street on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you would like more information on this great local recourse go to http://www.lexingtonfarmersmarket.com/.
This weekend our group will be at this particular Farmer's Market at 11 a.m. Come and see us and buy some great locally grown food.

HomeGrown1 Buying local foods is more help than it sounds! 0 Nov 11 2009, 11:44 AM EST by HomeGrown1

One of our team's mission is to convert people from buying processed foods from a grocery store and convincing people to buy localy grown foods. This is more effective to our environment than it sounds. One easy way to start buying local is to choose one product to focus on. Vegetables are often a good place to start.By adding transportation, processing and packaging to the food system equation, the fossil fuel and energy use of our current food system puts tremendous stress on the environment.Food processors also use a large amount of paper and plastic packaging to keep fresh food from spoiling as it is transported and stored for long periods of time. This packaging is difficult or impossible to reuse or recycle. In addition, industrial farms are a major source of air and water pollution.
